Teresa Heinz is more that just senator John Kerry's wife. She is a successful women in her own right.

Teresa was born Maria Teresa Thierstein Simoes-Ferreira in Mozambique to a Portuguese medical doctor. She led a nice lifestyle and went to school in South Africa and Switzerland before moving to the United States as a translator for the United Nations.

In 1966 she married Henry John Heinz III, a member of the Heinz ketchup and condiment family. They had three children together - Henry John Heinz IV, Andre, and Christopher. Heinz was elected as a U.S. Senator for Pennsylvania in 1976 and continued as Senator until he was killed in an airplane crash in 1991.

After her husband's death, Teresa became chairman of The Howard Heinz Endowment and the Heinz Family Philanthropies. The Heinz foundations are now known for developing innovative strategies to protect the environment, improve education and the lives of young children, reduce the cost of prescription drugs, promote the arts and help women achieve financial economic security.

Teresa first met John Kerry in 1990 and they were reintroduced the year after John Heinz's death. They married in 1995. In 1996 Teresa established the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement to educate women about pensions, savings, and retirement security. Teresa has received a number of awards and 10 honorary degrees for her work. She now supports her husband in the 2004 Presidential election.
